Dear Parents,
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the fifth grade team has adjusted the order of the culminating activities for the fifth grade students. Fifth Grade Day will now take place on Friday, May 19th, beginning around 9 a.m. The fifth grade promotional ceremony will be held on Monday, May 22nd, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Information about both events is outlined below. Furthermore, we are still in need of donations for fifth grade day and volunteers for both events.
For fifth grade day, the students will be treated to a day of fun and games, as well as a cook out. Students are able to bring beach chairs, towels, and family games (e.g. Frisbees, bats/balls) for the day. However, students are responsible for their own belongings, including any and all electronic games. We are in need of volunteers to help with the organization and running of the day. In particular, we need volunteers to assist with setting up and supervising the games, food preparation, grilling hamburgers, and helping to serve. If you are able to assist with the day’s activities, please contact your child’s teacher. Activities will begin around 9:00 a.m. and last until 1:15 p.m. You may check out your child at the conclusion of the day.
We are also requesting donations of food and drink items for 5th grade day. All non-perishable items can be given to your child’s homeroom teacher before the date. Visit the link at Sign Up Genius to indicate which items you are able to donate: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4ea9a622a0fa7-5thgrade. We will also accept monetary donations, payable to 5th Grade Activities, due by May 5th, 2017.
For the fifth grade promotional ceremony, students should dress up (no jeans or shorts; wear Sunday best) and wear any combination of black and white. The ceremony will be followed by a celebration in the cafeteria. You are able to check out your child once the ceremony is over. We will need assistance with the laying of the ‘red carpet’ and with decorating the gym and cafeteria on Friday, May 19th beginning at 2:45 p.m. Please indicate if you are able to help out with this time honored PSE tradition.
Please be reminded that the school will follow the early release schedule on Tuesday, May 23rd, and Wednesday, May 24th, which is the last day. All students will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m. Please note that these dates have also been set aside for retesting students who do not meet the standards on the Georgia Milestones in reading and mathematics.
We thank you for all that you have done to support the fifth grade team this year, and we are looking forward to these final memorable days as we prepare to send the students onto middle school.
Sincerely,
Fifth Grade Team

PAYMENT SCALE:
All students are expected to follow teacher expectations and the code of conduct for Powder Springs Elementary. Students that attend the field trip must be able to follow directions from their teacher or adult chaperone for their own safety as well as their classmates. A student cannot have more than 2 discipline referrals to be able to attend the trip to Charleston. Every child is starting out with a clean slate as of today.
- Because we will host fundraising opportunities, we ask that you only pay Payment #1 at this time.
- We want everyone to follow the payment schedule. The fundraisers are meant to help students pay for their trip – the remaining balance will be sent home after fundraising ends.
- There will be more opportunities for students to raise money for the trip (the first was Popcorn Palace). Chick-Fil-A, Krispy Kreme Doughnut Certificates and some other ideas are being considered as fundraisers.
- The first payment of $75 is due by November 1st, no later than November 11th.

Good Morning PSE Family,
Here are a few announcements:
October 6th, we will have a Parent Workshop: Raising Readers and Media Center Resources from 6pm-8pm. Have you ever wondered how you can help your child become a better reader or what free and convenient resources are available? Come out and discover new resources to promote successful reading. Light snacks will be available.
Yankee Candle orders have arrived! Please make arrangements to come and pick up orders daily by 3:30 no later than this Friday. Orders cannot be sent home on the bus with children.
PSE is the fortunate recipient of a grant from Crayola! In order to complete the process, we need to have a photo/video release form from each child. You should have received the form today, but it is imperative that the form is returned by this Friday, October 7th. This is a quick turnaround. As an incentive, all of the students that return the form by Friday will receive a dress down pass! Let’s get those formed signed and turned in quickly.
And finally, the annual PTA Fall Festival will be held Saturday, October 15th from 2-5pm. There will be games, food, vendors and fun! Look for a flier to come home this week. Come out and support your PSE PTA!
Thank you and have a pleasant day!
Dear Parents,
I am so excited to inform you that we have been selected to receive a grant from Crayola to support Arts Integration (AI) at Powder Springs! We will use the grant funds to provide AI training for our teachers and to fund AI materials/experiences for students. We will also receive $1000 worth of art materials by Crayola!
As recipients of the Crayola Grant, we must have a photo releases for all of our students, granting us permission to use still images and/or video in promotional materials and publications. If you do not give permission, please indicate that on the form, sign and date it, as well.
The forms must be returned by Friday, October 7th. Students will receive a dress down pass for returning their form by this Friday.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Debbie Broadnax

International Dot Day
Why are we celebrating Dot Day?
Dot Day was developed by the author of The Dot, Peter Reynolds, to celebrate his book as well as highlight the message it sends to students. We love what this book teaches students about how we can all make our mark on the world and how it supports and encourages the creative spirit in us all. Every student has a little Vashti inside! We also love that this book aligns perfectly with Arts Integration!

Zaxbsy's Night Tonight!
Hello everyone,
Let’s celebrate back to school!!! Please come out tonight and support our PSE School Foundation at Zaxby’s on Brownsville Road from 5-8pm. We get 10% of ALL sales from 5-8pm and these funds will support our Arts Integration program. Please encourage your students, families, and friends to attend (even if they are just rolling through the drive-thru). EVERY STUDENT WHO ATTENDS WILL RECEIVE A DRESS DOWN STICKER FOR WEDNESDAY (they have to come inside and show a receipt in order to get a sticker), so please remind your students about this incentive. Also, teachers who attend will receive a dress down pass as well. Hope to see you there! Thanks for your support!
